From Australian IT; “AusCERT sidelined in CERT revamp“. Sadly the big question that most will raise from this is; “What will happen to the yearly junket, (I mean conference), on the Gold Coast?” Be shocked if anyone even responds to this post.
Positive to see the Government doing things. Hopefully it’s being well planned and thought out.

Couldn’t let the opportunity for some shock value pass me by…
FIRST!1!!one!
We cannot make light of this. This has potentially devastating implications for the IT security professional in Australia.
No other conference is as ideally located, does not strain the brain in terms of content and learning something new, and provides for a 4 day piss up in paradise, (all paid for by the IT security professional’s company)!
Perhaps if AusCERT had truely invested time in working with security professionals and engaging the Australian public in real awareness campaigns, rather than running a fair-to-mediocre conference and engaging in self-promotion, the outcome may have been different
AusCERT can continue presenting their mediocre conference and now that they will not be responsible for CERT they can spend even more time to create an even ‘mediocreerer’ conference. The can rebadge themselves as AusCONF…
@Seriously if you are only getting 4 days your not doing good enough… AusCERT also provide training for 2 days that you can broaden your horizons at the end of the conference.
Can someone remind me what AusCERT have to do with the NBN again?
You funny buggers. Should have known.
@Christian – fair question. Seems I should know and understand this but I don’t. Maybe a demonstration of the “relevance” and “awareness” question overall of AusCERT. Big project, organisation looking for relevence….lets attach to what we can, to grab that relevance and ensure a couple more years of existence. I suppose any organisation would do the same but lets call a spade a spade here and make the suggestion that a more established CERT with presence and greater industry cred would not be so easily ousted (if that is the plan?)!
@DD I wish *I* had a plan.. at the moment all I want to do is get HEAPS of monitors behind me… I’ve heard that helps with cred. (grins @ @isidort)
To borrow Gus Gould’s inspired quote,
“No, no, no no no.”
What will happen to the;
P1ss ups
Movie World
Vendor freebies
Booth babes
This is serious, dudes !
A university responsible for computer security? lololololol academia is known for being 10 years behind in infosec. Only good course out there is the one I teach.
auscert are the XXXXXXX XXXXX around, its not a wonder that someone higher up realised they’re useless.

LULZ, you’ll have to send us details of the course. I assume demand is high with long waiting lists.
Seriously, I know a few Universities here trying hard to improve the quality of their infosec courses. I understood the QUT IT courses rated pretty good but no idea on infosec side of things. Securus Global team works with a couple of universities in various roles on a number of courses on Information Security – assistant lecturers/lecturers, pracs, course development, etc.
One could also say many infosec people in the “field” are more than 10 years behind the time themselves.
DD
Yeah I would agree DD… I feel ten years behind the times.. especially with all these uber-smart kids like thoth and kuza55 kickin’ it up
Someone promote me to management already – I’m too old for this job!!
Hey BG,
you forgot to mention AusCert’s gala, industry-backslapping night – the SCMag awards !!
Now will this years’ be the only ones ever ? I was really hoping to get the gong for “most despised ITsec media pest”.
And apparently I wasn’t the only one in the running – yourself & @cmlh were frontrunners for the award.
With Patrick Gray on the panel – you guys would surely be a tied vote for most despised ITsec media pests of the year !!
@Drazen,
No doubt XXXX will miss their nightly visit to the “full touch” Gentlemen’s Clubs near Cavill Ave during SellingOutCERT.
Think of XXXX, because as XXXXXXXXXXX proved, XXXX don’t think of anyone else.
@The Knuckle,
There are more deserving ppl them me would should have won that award who weren’t nominated.
That stated, I would have deficated on the award and wiped my ass with @big_galoot’s “YOU FAIL ME” shirt if I had won
[DD Note: cmlh, some comments edited out ('XXXXX') where content may be considered offensive]
There’s some imagery here which is not good. @cmlh, you can never be accused of leaving anyone in doubt as to your thoughts.
@Seriously
The deficate statement was inspired by the lyrics of Deicide’s “When Satan Rules His World” and like Kerry King (Slayer) I don’t mince my words.
Obviously, it should be viewed in the context of black humor.
@DDrazic
Community Standards would have dictated that visiting strip club is offensive but that is the problem with ethics – they are dictated by profitability and the brainwashing from the Sunnyboys music
Yes, it kind of sounds silly reading it back. Should have just mentioned use of company and people’s names.
The awards were a major disappointment. Kind of cringe really. If AusCERT survives (conference), please no SC awards. Embarrassing for all involved.
