Okay, thanks for the responses to the last post. Yep, this does deserve it’s own post.
Makes a mockery of leaders in technologies (like SaaS eg; Qualys) that have been doing great things for years that are now classified as in the same cloud….lumped in with the likes of the below.
Reboot: “I think it’s to late though….critical mass of acceptance of the term [cloud] is now to great! We’re going to have to live with many failed technologies that have a new lease of life now under a “new” name. Bit like this Ferrari here.”

Surely to god, if there is a god, given the passage of time, the term “Cloud computing” will be relegated to that stinking scrap heap of similarly cringe-worthy & cruddy expressions like “The Information Super Highway” and “multimedia”.
But don’t expect it to die out for good. One expects the term will be kept alive by a small group of avid enthusiasts, dusted off & trotted out in media releases or at Warcraft get-togethers, used like a crusty badge of honor by that mothballed brown cardigan club – the ACS.

Tis toooooo late as mentioned above. The groups and alliances are forming and the voices of reason and (in)sanity are being drowned out by the noise.

@BG – that’s not fair. I love riding waves on the information super highway!!
A bit of healthy cynicism is warranted given failures and lack of any significant value of many previous “labels” and the associated technologies, including related alliances, working groups etc.
I wish the CSA well and hopefully with a strong commitment (and there’s some good people involved), they can add value/benefit.
Hang on a minute,
isn’t the term “cloud” simply a metaphor for the Internet ?
In times past, wasn’t a cloud used for merely depicting “the internet” in computer network diagrams, a previously-funky, cool abstraction for the complex infrastructure it concealed ?
So then, whats all this new “cloud computing” wankery all about ?
I see we now have new “cloud” organisations popping up, such as “cloudsecurityalliance.org” etc.
Why do I get the feeling that the terms “cloud” and “the internet” are one in the same ?
And why do I get exactly the same feeling about stuff like New, improved, Omo detergent, with added bioballs ?
Dear BG,
I like the cut of your jib and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
Please sign me up.
Also, would like to add, that I definitely relate the term “cloud” as encapsulation – just as you speculated above.
Signed your faithful “encapsulation” critic,

It is a paradigm shift and it is not surprising that security people like you don’t get it. We are working on another way now to solve this problem and it will work. Having cynics does not help. We all need think positively to solve this problem. We’re all in the same boat!
You have never used our product I can tell. McAfee is the leading supplier of products that protect organizations from security risks. We have protected organizations for almost 20 years.
Thinking that the latest response is a marketing dude. No other way to absorb it other than he’s a new guy and thinking we’re all stupid. May well be the case.
In which case, he’s right and we are all dumb. But seriously, New Thinker, you are a fuckwit!
Holding internal discussions means nothing! Cloud BS is something the security industry could have controlled. Anyone in the security industry that “fell into” accepting :”CLOUD” is a fucking wanker. It’s another excuse!
@New Thinkers
Nice bait, mate.
Ok, I’ll bite: but only on the grounds that you used that stinking dog-turd of a term, “paradigm shift” in your rant.
So here we all were, gabbling, in a semi-civilised way, about how much the term “cloud computing” sucks.
Then, out of the blue, you opened fire with your “paradigm shift” stench-gun. The use of that term in public is akin to getting into a packed lift, and disgracing yourself by loudly dropping your guts. Funny, yes, but not cool.
If ever there was a term that instantly rendered it’s user the rightful victim of an instantaneous punch in the nose, “paradigm shift” tops my list.
BG.
Was it NetWare 4 that brought “paradigm shift” into IT big time? I couldn’t recall hearing it much, if at all before NetWare 4. I remember every speaker at the time using the term. Gees, it’s still around as we often hear.
As a VFR pilot I have no place being anywhere near cloud.
@Declan, the quality of the opposite sex hanging around you would be better also than your typical Cloud Evangelist. It is all relative and I suppose they probably get the same kicks thinking about the Cloud as you do in them.
